As everyone who’s finished  Buffy the Vampire Slayer  knows, Giles arranges the assassination attempt of Spike by Robin Wood in the season 7 episode “Lies My Parents Told Me,” after finding out both that the First has been triggering Spike to commit murders and that Buffy had a pain chip removed from Spike’s brain. I could see valid reasons why Giles would be concerned: Spike is dangerous (although the chip thats removal he makes so much of was obviously useless in the event of a triggering...

Recently, I  posted  on why I think the obvious defenses of Giles’s acts in “Lies My Parents Told Me” don’t hold up under scrutiny. However, I do think that his arc in seasons 6-7 is good, albeit depressing, storytelling. I crossposted the original to DW and received a response suggesting that Giles was acting out of prejudices stemming from Jenny’s death in season 2. Here’s my reply: It’s plausible enough that anti-vampire-specific prejudice plays a role (although Giles praises...

It’s no secret that my only real OTP in the  Buffy verse is Sprusilla. That said, I  like  plenty of the other ships, including B*ngel… up until he dumps her and disappears, and Buffy remains obsessed with him. I always find myself rooting for B*ngel in seasons 2 and 3, for all the usual reasons: They’re star-crossed lovers, they have massive hurt/comfort potential, and I really want Buffy to get some before a demon kills her. I’m not  super -crazy about Angel, but if being with him will...

Today in nonsense: Drusilla's costumes The white Regency-esque gown.  I really like this one, because she actually pulls off the shape, the white drives home the whole newlywed vibe of these crazy, 120-years-married kids, and it takes on a retrospective significance as a sign of the purity-obsessed virgin nun that Angel turned back in the 1860s. OTOH, she and Spike probably didn’t pack THAT many copies in the trunk of their car when they rode into Sunnydale, and she wears it for half a...

Contrarian opinion: Buffy was justified in trying to capture/kill Faith in “Graduation Day, Part 1,” because Faith’s poison was still working against Angel, and, if killing Faith prevents Faith from completing an imminent murder, then that’s justifiable homicide. She would also have been justified if she had indeed killed Katrina by accident in the graveyard in “Dead Things,” on the grounds that it resulted from neither negligence nor malice, but was the result of choices which Buffy...
